Louise Pickford and the food
Our menus, whilst celebrating the incredible fresh produce of the region, often combine flavours and dishes from around the world. With a wealth of cooking and styling experience, Louise Pickford has worked with some of the the best chefs, food writers, stylists and photographers from around the world. After a successful career in food publishing, Louise moved to the Charente with her photographer husband (Ian Wallace) in 2015 where she has set up a successful cookery school. Louise is the author of over 30 cookbooks. She has also served as food editor on several high profile food and lifestyle magazines in both London and Sydney, including Options Magazine, BBC Vegetarian Food Magazine, InsideOut, Real Living magazine and Grazia UK. She also writes regularly for Food & Travel Magazine, Delicious UK and Australia, Sainsbury’s magazine and many more.
Louise’s food philosophy is very much about using the season’s best produce to create delicious but simple, honest dishes and she has a definite flare for pairing Asian, Middle Eastern and North African flavours with more traditional Northern European ingredients. She has long wanted to open her own easting “establishment”, and her collaboration with Mike and Katie has turned a dream into a successful reality.
“ Moving to France has been a real eye opener for me - with some the best ingredients I have ever come across over the years, the lack of good local restaurants is astonishing”.
mike armitage and the wine
The wine served is meticulously researched and chosen by Michael Armitage (the Interesting Wine Club, London) to match Louise's - and the guest chef’s - menus. Options are discussed in detail, and sampled, to make sure they best compliment the food to be served - and often the other way round! Mike will be delivering the vertical and horizontal wine tastings and is always happy to discuss the merits and provenance of each choice before and during the meal with those interested in oenology.
Katie elliott armitage and The location
La Tablée is situated in the Perigord Vert, Aquitaine region of south west France, about 40kms from the busy historical towns of both Angoulème and Perigueux, near the village of Verteillac. The venue, L'Espace, is set atop a small hill with a huge terrace and magnificent views across the valley and guest accommodation is both within the L’Espace and the Maison de Maître, 50m away. The reconfiguration of both the main house and the original C14th barn, with it's combination of modern minimalism and traditional building materials, was the brain child of Katie Elliott Armitage who has been running workshops at L'Espace for the last 12 years. The resulting unique ambience reflects Katie's warmth, sense of style and hosting skills and has been the venue of the regular residential events.. It continues to be the preferred locale of numerous weddings, musical concerts and creative workshops.
